When your to-do list looks more like a shopping list surely it’s impossible not to burnout / live on the edge of it?
Everyone you meet has a story to tell you about how they’ve either been on the verge of burnout several times or did indeed burnout!
The irony is that most people who start a business/get a new job are doing it to get better work-life balance, to be able to spend more time doing what why love with the people they love.
What’s the deal
“How we do one thing is how we do everything”, one of my favourite quotes, and it means if we don’t address why we burned out in the past it will happen again.
At this point, I’ll share a bit of my own journey to illustrate the point.
For over 10 years I worked in financial services marketing clocking 60-70 hour weeks.
No one was holding a gun to my head forcing me to work these hours but on reflection two things were in play, the first was culture, I was surrounded by other people who also worked long hours so it seemed normal (we copy what we see) and the second was how I was raised by parents and a society that praises hard work and hustle (you need to put in the hours).
Destined to burnout
When you combine the examples, stories, beliefs and culture burnout/living on the brink of it is inevitable. Life is the reflection of the beliefs we hold and the actions we take based on those beliefs, we create our own reality.
The reframe
It is possible not to burnout/live on the edge of it. All we have to do is replace the beliefs we have, with the beliefs we need in order to create different results.
Simple but not easy
As with most things in life, change is possible, but it requires things to change and although we want different results we don’t often enjoy trying new things in order to get them.
As Einstein once said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result”
Ready for change
There comes a time in everyone’s life when they reach the point of ‘now or never’ and if that’s where you are right now then here are 8 things to remember when it comes to avoiding burnout/living on the edge.
1. Change is not as scary as it seems
2. All it takes is 8 seconds of courage to get started
3. No is an answer, you can learn how to use it without confrontation
4. When you say no to others you say yes to yourself
5. Hard work does not equal good work
6. Productivity is a mindset not hours at the grindstone
7. Your health is your wealth
8. It is never too late to start today
